Artist Jaffa Lam on scent and memory, art in a fast-food Chinese in New York, and the Hong Kong Art School.
Ep.57 | Artist and art educator Jaffa Lam works from her studio in the New Territories, Hong Kong. I travelled to Fo Tan to meet Jaffa and we spoke about her childhood memories of growing up in China, how a bet in a Chinese restaurant in New York enthused her to make art, grappling with imposter syndrome, determination, and her 500 rocks of the Monkey King.
Jaffa Lam is a Hong Kong-based artist specializing in large-scale, site-specific and mixed-media works, often making use of recycled materials, such as crate wood, old furniture, abandoned metal and umbrella fabric. Since 1999, in her “Micro Economic” and other public/community projects, she has been connecting heritage and current affairs, and representing ordinary people through non-narrative and dialogical installations.
