Curator Laure Raibaut on Picasso’s Paintings in Glass and the ecology of visual art in Hong Kong.
Ep.56 | In this episode of The Last Supper I met curator and art historian Laure Raibaut in Cheung Chau in Hong Kong. We sat down and spoke about her upcoming Picasso exhibition of paintings in glass in The Landmark and HKU Museum and Art Gallery, we talked about the state of art in Hong Kong, and the challenges artists and art collectors are facing in Hong Kong.
Laure Raibaut is a curator and art historian with expertise in Asian and European art. Laure founded her own company Nissa Bella Art Management in 2018. She was trained as an archaeologist and an art historian at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in London, the Sorbonne in Paris and the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. She started her career in Beijing with Platform China Art Institute and then worked for galleries in New York and Hong Kong, as well as leading sales for the auction houses Bonhams and Christie's.
She then worked at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the longest standing independent art institution in Hong Kong, opened in 1977 and has curated shows there. This led to an expansion in the field of her expertise when she took on the role of Head of Visual Arts for Le French May and Lumieres, the two festivals initiated by the Association Culturelle France - Hong Kong. In that role she initiated, negotiated and produced several major exhibitions, including "L'Ecole de Nice" and "Niki de Saint-Phalle", as well as initiated and negotiated "Mythologies : Surrealism and Beyond, Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou", where she also acted as representative of the MNAM.
While working for L'ECOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, Laure managed and produced the exhibition "The Art of Gold - 3,000 years of Chinese Treasures" in Hong Kong (masterpieces from the Mengdiexuan Collection, now on show at the HKPM). Currently Laure is co-curating the exhibition "Pablo Picasso: Paintings in Glass", with UMAG (HKU Museum and Art Gallery) and in the framework of Le French May. She also teaches at L’ECOLE School of Jewelry Arts and is a lecturer for the Masters program at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Laure also participates in many talks and conferences around the world.
