Artist May Yeung on her Quotation Mark, how cancer impacted her art practice, and her charity work Art of My Family.
Ep.63 | In this episode I sat down with Hong Kong based artist May Yeung. We talked about how she began as a sculptor and how she transitioned to a full-time mixed media artist, her motivation behind her charity Art of My Family, the impact of cancer on her art practice , and how she engages the general audience through her art workshops.
May Yeung specialises in sculpture-making and public arts. Graduate of the University of Chicago in Visual Arts and Political Science, she was yet the one and only Asian to have had public exhibitions at Chicago Union Station, Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, and Harper Memorial Library, showcasing her public art works - Citation, What If... (2010) and #. (2012). Upon her return to Hong Kong, May was invited to showcase Cocoon at The Residence of the Netherlands Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau. She was selected to be the only local sculptor to exhibit at French May Arts Festival (2017 & 2018).
May established Art of MY Family to organize community art events for social impacts (2018) primarily to bring community arts to the public mass and promote cultural exchange. She was the curator and artist for Fill Central with Love Exhibition and Workshops (2021) supported by Urban Renewal Authority at Central Market. Since 2021, Art of MY Family has been partnering up with Hong Kong Cancer Fund in several initiatives, including the advocacy of up- cycling, transforming worn-bamboo steamers into artworks, as well as the promotion of women empowerment and social harmony.
