Vivek Mahbubani on the art of laughter, overcoming lymphoma cancer, and his research behind his comedy.

Vivek Mahbubani

Ep.104 | In this episode I visit Hong Kong born stand-up comedian Vivek Mahbubani. We’ll talk about his creative journey, starting from his days in a heavy metal band to his transition into comedy. Vivek opens up about his experiences growing up as an Indian kid in Hong Kong, how lymphoma cancer was a blessing, confronting discrimination and how these challenges influenced his outlook on life. We explore how comedy acts as a powerful medium for self-expression, allowing him to provide a unique perspective on everyday situations. At the end we talk about his introspective research that informs his performances and we touch on his next project, a possible comedy world tour.

Vivek Mahbubani is a Hong Kong-bred bilingual stand-up comedian performing in both Cantonese and English. Having been crowned the Funniest Person (in Chinese) in Hong Kong in 2007 followed by his victory in the English category at the Hong Kong International Comedy Competition in 2008, he also became one of the recipients of the 2018 Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) Selection Award. Vivek has had the opportunity to take his sense of humor all over the world including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Canada and USA.
